There is no way to successfully navigate a forward moving car while steadily looking at the rear view mirror. Yet, we often cling to the things that have happened to us; we re-live and sometimes wallow.
Others try to hide their past, but even the shame is a sort of clinging. To be ashamed of the past suggests an attachment to the story of who you think you are now because of it.
Either way, the past reigns over the present. However, releasing it doesn’t equate to discarding it. If we practice awareness, there is value in whatever has transpired.
The past is there to inform. Rather than fixate on what took place, carry the lessons forth into the present moment. Don’t allow the past to consume your attention. Your future depends on it.
